Legal English Course Miami

The program provides opportunities to meet other law students and practitioners from around the world, and includes professional, networking, and social events, as well as visits within Miami`s legal community. Many of the skills associated with obtaining a law degree are language skills. These include writing, reading, listening, analytical and oral presentation skills. The Legal English course aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in an English-speaking legal environment, with a particular focus on legal vocabulary, oral and written reasoning, public speaking, and insight into the American legal system. Each week focuses on a specific skill and includes a legal proficiency unit, legal English classes, and two lectures on legal topics designed to expose students to study various areas of law in the United States. Fridays and some afternoons and evenings are used to plan professional networking and social events. Activities include a visit to the courthouse and meeting with a judge, a visit to a government agency, a visit to a local art museum, participation in a Major League Baseball game, and/or a networking reception on or off campus. Week One – Students will be introduced to reading and understanding case law and developing their literacy skills. Second week – Students focus on negotiation to resolve a dispute and hone their oral communication skills.

Lectures may cover areas of interest to international students, such as international arbitration, cross-border taxation, transactional skills, or entertainment law. Skills in law and law present challenges for all students, even those who are native speakers. If English is not a student`s first language, that student will face additional challenges.
