In my current role at Facebook, I oversee the company`s marketing, advertising and branding campaigns outside of North America. I provide advice to the company on promotional and sales materials to ensure they are fair, accurate and comply with the law. It can sometimes be difficult to work across so many time zones, especially with the number of requests generated by this type of business. My usual day starts around 7:00 a.m. when I make a call or two with Asia before dropping my three sons off at school, and ends around 10:00 p.m. after making contact with my counterpart in the United States. It`s not mandatory, but it works for me to take time with my family earlier in the evening and get back to work when America wakes up. I`ve met so many inspiring people in my career that it`s hard to pick just one. The people who inspire me the most are those who do things differently, raise their voices and break down barriers in the profession. I think the proudest moment of my career so far must be when I won an award for a pro bono trial at ULaw. The award was spent two weeks in South Africa as part of the Streetlaw program. I am still honored to have had this great opportunity.
It was a great revelation to see how the law can be used to influence significant changes in society and how lawyers can use their skills to truly change the lives of the disadvantaged. The sponsor of the award was the former President of the Law Society and donating the award was his way of continuing to pay for the privilege he had in his own career. I hope that one day I will be able to pay reasonably. Caroline Kenny is a leading lawyer for Facebook in every country outside the United States. She began her brilliant career when she graduated from the University of Law in 2004 after studying GDL and LPC. Working in many jurisdictions means it never gets boring. I like to learn new things about advertising and consumer law in different parts of the world. And the ability to travel with work is a big plus; I enjoy working in different offices and learning the fascinating nuances of working with other cultures. The teaching at ULaw was excellent – I came from a non-legal background and found the transition to GDL to be quite a change.
Sometimes when I doubted my abilities, the teachers were fabulously encouraging and inspiring. I remember being so amazed and grateful when I started my apprenticeship contract and realizing that all the subjects we had learned at ULaw were absolutely in line with professional life – I understood what people were talking about and I knew how to design things. I still occasionally refer to my old ULaw textbooks; Some laws are never outdated. I also met so many other fantastic students on the course that I am still friends with today. My top tip for law students who want to work at Facebook is to complete a solid stay in private practice. We usually hire post-qualified experience from 2 years old and look for candidates who can demonstrate strong experience and competence in their field. The internal experience is also a real plus. Stay up to date on the tech sector and keep an eye on job boards on Facebook Careers. To shine here, you need great energy, quick thinking, and the confidence to be brave and speak up when you disagree.
